Elektrolit adalah cairan yang mengandung asam sulfat di dalam aki. Cairan ini meresap ke pori-pori pelat dan separator pada sel aki, sehingga memungkinkan terjadinya reaksi kimia yang menghasilkan serta menyimpan energi listrik.

Saat aki diisi ulang, proses kimia yang terjadi saat discharge akan berbalik. Senyawa yang terbentuk selama penggunaan akan kembali menjadi komponen awal seperti lead dioxide, lead, dan asam sulfat sehingga energi kimia dalam aki kembali tersimpan.

Pengisian daya harus dilakukan dengan voltase yang tepat. Voltase terlalu tinggi dapat menyebabkan air elektrolit terurai, sedangkan voltase terlalu rendah membuat aki tidak terisi dengan baik dan dapat memperpendek usia pemakaian.

Ketika perangkat listrik terhubung ke aki, terjadi perbedaan potensial antara kutub negatif dan positif. Hal ini menyebabkan elektron mengalir dari kutub negatif melalui perangkat listrik menuju kutub positif, sehingga energi listrik dapat digunakan.

Hubungan arus pendek terjadi ketika terminal aki terhubung langsung dengan material konduktif. Kondisi ini berbahaya karena aki memiliki daya besar dan dapat menyebabkan panas berlebih, kebakaran, bahkan ledakan.
